Wanderlog vs TripIt: Which Travel App Fits How You Travel?

Comparison

Quick answer: Wanderlog is a trip-planning app. You build a day-by-day plan on a map, often with friends, while you decide what to do. TripIt is an itinerary organizer. You forward confirmation emails and it assembles your bookings into one timeline, with paid travel-day alerts. Pick Wanderlog to plan the trip and TripIt to keep confirmed plans straight.

The two apps get compared constantly because both say "itinerary". They solve different problems, though, and many travelers end up using both. This guide compares Wanderlog vs TripIt feature by feature, with current prices, and covers a third kind of app for the part neither focuses on: what happens after you book.

Disclosure: we make TripCache, a post-booking trip organizer. To keep this fair, every Wanderlog and TripIt claim below comes from their own pricing pages, help centers and app store listings, checked on 5 October 2026. Prices are US prices and can change, so confirm them before you subscribe.

"Not listed" means we found no such feature on the company's pricing page, help center or store listing.

What Wanderlog is best at

Wanderlog describes itself on the App Store as a free planner "for planning every kind of trip, including road trips and group travel". Its strengths all sit before and around the bookings:

  • Building the plan. Add places, see each day's stops on a map with times and distances between them, and pull ideas from recommendations and travel guides.
  • Planning together. Friends can edit the same trip in real time, and the free plan has no limit on how many people you plan with.
  • Budgets and shared costs. The listing says you can set a budget, track expenses and split bills with a group.
  • Booking details. Each trip gets its own email address, such as trip+123@wanderlog.com. Forward a flight, hotel or rental car email to it and the reservation is added to the plan.

Where Wanderlog is weaker

Two features many travelers expect are paid. Wanderlog's help center says only Pro members can save trip plans for offline use, and route optimization is Pro as well. Its US App Store description still says plans are "automatically stored offline", so check the help center if offline access matters to you.

Wanderlog also isn't built for the admin side of a trip. We found no cancellation-deadline reminders, no check-in reminders and no document lock in its help center or store listings.

What TripIt is best at

TripIt, owned by SAP Concur, starts from your bookings rather than from places. Its pricing page explains the core workflow: forward confirmation emails to plans@tripit.com and TripIt builds an itinerary for each trip.

  • Email import on the free plan. Besides forwarding, Inbox Sync connects Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook, Microsoft 365, Hotmail and Yahoo inboxes and adds plans automatically.
  • One itinerary across bookings. Flights, hotels, cars and other reservations sit on one timeline. The free plan also syncs to your calendar and lets you share plans.
  • Travel-day help with Pro. TripIt Pro adds real-time flight alerts, check-in reminders 24 hours before a flight, alternate flights, seat and fare tracking, gate reminders, airport navigation and baggage claim information.
  • Wide device support. iOS (including Apple Watch), Android (including Android Wear) and the web.

Where TripIt is weaker

TripIt isn't built for deciding what to do. It can find places near your hotel, but there's no day-by-day place planning on a map like Wanderlog's, and live co-editing isn't the point; you share a finished itinerary. Most of the travel-day features that make it famous are in Pro. Document storage is capped at 3 files per trip on the free plan.

Wanderlog vs TripIt, job by job

Planning a trip from scratch

Winner: Wanderlog. It's designed for choosing places, ordering them by day and seeing the route. TripIt assumes you already know your plans.

Importing booking emails

Winner: TripIt. Both accept forwarded confirmations for free. TripIt also connects to six inbox providers on the free plan, while Wanderlog's automatic Gmail scanning needs Pro. One App Store reviewer called Wanderlog's hotel forwarding "a little wonky" and re-entered the details by hand, so check what each app pulls in.

On the travel day

Winner: TripIt Pro. Real-time flight alerts, gate reminders, check-in reminders and baggage claim details are its strongest paid features. Wanderlog's in-app Pro screens list live flight updates, but they're not on its public Pro page, so test them on a real trip first.

Group trips

Winner: Wanderlog. Real-time collaboration and bill splitting are free. TripIt lets you share plans but isn't built for planning together.

Offline access

Winner: TripIt on the free plan, because its pricing page says you can access your itinerary offline. Wanderlog needs Pro for offline trip plans.

Budgets, documents and deadlines

Split. Wanderlog has the better budget tools. TripIt holds more documents per trip with Pro. Neither app lists reminders for free-cancellation deadlines, which is where a post-booking organizer comes in (see below).

Wanderlog pricing: free plan vs Pro

Wanderlog's help center says the app "will remain free forever" for as many trips and travel companions as you want. It also says it never shows ads; the company earns a commission on bookings made in the app plus Pro subscriptions.

On wanderlog.com/pro, Wanderlog Pro costs $39.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, as of 5 October 2026. That's the price most people search for when they look up Wanderlog Pro cost, but it isn't the only one. The US App Store lists annual plans at $31.99, $39.99, $49.99 and $59.99 and monthly plans at $5.99 and $16.99, so the offer you see can vary.

Is Wanderlog Pro worth it? Pay for it if you need offline maps and plans abroad, plan road trips where route optimization saves real time, or want Gmail scanning instead of forwarding emails. If you plan at home on Wi-Fi and forward a few confirmations, the free plan covers most of what Wanderlog does well.

TripIt pricing: free vs TripIt Pro

TripIt's free plan builds your itinerary, syncs it to your calendar, lets you share plans and stores 3 documents per trip. TripIt Pro costs $49 a year on TripIt's website, with a 30-day free trial. The in-app purchase is listed at $48.99 a year on the App Store and Google Play. The TripIt app listing also says SAP Concur users can get TripIt Pro free, so check with your employer before paying.

TripIt Pro is worth it mainly for frequent flyers who want alerts and airport help. If you mostly need a tidy itinerary, the free plan already does that.

Wanderlog reviews: what users say

Store ratings for both apps are high, as of 5 October 2026:

App
Wanderlog
App Store (US)
4.9 from about 36,000 ratings
Google Play (US)
4.7 from about 37,000 reviews, 1M+ downloads
App
TripIt
App Store (US)
4.8 from about 311,000 ratings
Google Play (US)
4.7 from about 96,000 reviews, 5M+ downloads

Wanderlog is an Editors' Choice on both stores. A typical recent Google Play review praises how easy it is to plan with a partner, see travel times on road trips and divide costs.

Complaints are more visible elsewhere. Wanderlog's Trustpilot page shows 1.9 out of 5 from only 51 reviews, a small sample. The recurring complaints there are free-trial and subscription prompts, place information that's out of date, and the app feeling slow on large plans. On the App Store, one reviewer who otherwise liked the app said hotel bookings forwarded by email sometimes had to be re-entered by hand.

Our read: Wanderlog is well liked as a planner. Treat it as a planning tool rather than the single source of truth for confirmed bookings.

Where TripCache fits: after you book

Wanderlog helps you decide what to do. TripIt keeps your reservations in order. TripCache is built for the jobs that come after booking: deadlines, documents and costs. It's a newer, smaller app than either, and it doesn't plan trips or support collaboration.

Free in TripCache Basic:

  • Cancellation-deadline reminders. Save a free-cancellation deadline on a hotel, rental car or other booking, then pick reminders 7 days, 2 days, 1 day before or on the day. Our hotel cancellation policy guide explains how those deadlines work.
  • Check-in reminders. A heads-up 48 hours before departure and an alert at 24 hours, with a shortcut that copies your booking reference and opens the airline's website. It doesn't check you in automatically.
  • A document vault for passports, visas, boarding passes and insurance, with an optional PIN and Face ID or fingerprint unlock.
  • Boarding-pass scanning. Scan the barcode on a boarding pass to add or update a flight.
  • Expenses and budgets in 153 currencies, with the exchange rate locked on each expense.
  • CSV and PDF export, including a Visa / Immigration Summary. See how to find your travel history for why that matters.
  • Offline access to trips and saved documents.

TripCache Pro ($5.99 a month or about $50 a year in the US stores, October 2026) adds forwarding booking emails to a personal import address, live flight-status alerts, and Live Activity and widgets. Imported bookings arrive as drafts you review, and Pro includes a monthly import allowance.

What TripCache doesn't do: place recommendations, group planning, a web app or expense splitting. If those matter most, Wanderlog is the better fit.

Which should you choose?

Choose Wanderlog if:

  • You're still deciding where to go and what to see.
  • You're planning with friends or family and want everyone editing one plan.
  • You're doing a road trip and want routes and drive times on a map.

Choose TripIt if:

  • Your bookings arrive by email and you want one itinerary built for you.
  • You fly often and would pay for real-time alerts and airport help.
  • Your employer uses SAP Concur.

Choose TripCache if:

  • Your trips are booked and the risk is missing a free-cancellation deadline or check-in.
  • You want passports, visas and boarding passes locked inside the trip.
  • You need multi-currency expense records or a PDF of past trips for a visa form, without paying for a subscription.

The Wanderlog vs TripIt choice doesn't have to be either-or. Use two together: plan the trip in Wanderlog, then keep the confirmed bookings in TripIt or TripCache. Our guide to organizing travel confirmation emails covers that handoff. Still comparing more apps? See our best travel apps for planning and TripIt alternatives.

How we compared

For this Wanderlog vs TripIt comparison, we checked every feature and price on 5 October 2026 against Wanderlog's Pro page, help center and subscription details, TripIt's pricing page and help center, and the US App Store and Google Play listings of all three apps. Where a company's sources disagree, we say so. If you spot something that has changed, the official pages linked above are the authority.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wanderlog free?

Yes. Wanderlog's help center says the website and app will remain free forever, for as many trips and travel companions as you want. The free plan includes unlimited places, live collaboration, booking import by email and budgets. Wanderlog Pro, from $39.99 a year in the US as of October 2026, adds offline access, route optimization and Gmail scanning.

What is Wanderlog?

Wanderlog is a trip-planning app for iOS, Android and the web. You add places to a day-by-day itinerary shown on a map, plan with friends in real time, track a budget and split costs. It is strongest before and during the trip, when you are deciding what to do, rather than for managing booking deadlines.

Is TripIt free?

Yes. The free TripIt plan builds an itinerary from forwarded confirmation emails or a connected inbox, syncs plans to your calendar, lets you share them and stores 3 documents per trip. TripIt Pro, at $49 a year on TripIt's website as of October 2026, adds real-time flight alerts, check-in reminders and airport tools.

How does TripIt work?

TripIt reads your travel confirmation emails. You forward them to plans@tripit.com, or connect Gmail, Outlook, Microsoft 365, Yahoo or other supported inboxes with Inbox Sync, and TripIt groups the bookings into a trip itinerary. You can then view it in the app or on the web, sync it to a calendar and share it.

Can you use Wanderlog and TripIt together?

Yes, and many travelers do. Use Wanderlog to plan places, routes and days with your group, then forward the confirmations to TripIt so your flights and hotels sit in one itinerary with travel-day alerts. The apps do not sync with each other, so a changed booking needs updating in each one.

Does Wanderlog work offline?

Only with Pro. Wanderlog's help center says Pro members can save trip plans in the iOS or Android app and open notes, places and attachments without a connection. The App Store description still mentions automatic offline storage, so confirm how your plan behaves before you rely on it abroad.

Which is better for road trips, Wanderlog or TripIt?

Wanderlog is better for road trips. It shows each day's stops on a map with travel times, and Pro adds route optimization and export to Google Maps. TripIt is built around reservations, so it helps less when most of the trip is driving between places you have not booked.
