Flight time zone questions
Short answers about local times, date changes and flight time estimates.
How do I calculate my flight's arrival time?
Add the flight duration to the departure time, then convert the result into the arrival airport's time zone. The calculator does both steps for you, including any daylight-saving change on that date.
How long is my flight? Can the calculator estimate flight time?
Yes. If you don't have the duration from your ticket, the calculator estimates flight time from the great-circle distance between the two airports, a typical jet cruising speed and time for taxi, climb and descent. Winds, routing and airline schedules change real durations, so use the scheduled duration on your ticket when you have it.
Why does my flight land on a different day, or even the day before?
Flights that cross several time zones can land on the next calendar day. Flying east across the International Date Line, for example from Sydney to Los Angeles, can land on the same date or a date that looks earlier than departure, because the arrival city is many hours behind.
Are the times on my ticket local time?
Yes. Airlines publish each departure and arrival time in the local time of that airport, which is why the arrival time can look shorter or longer than the actual flight.
Does the calculator account for daylight saving time?
Yes. Each airport uses its own time zone from the airport database, and the offset is worked out for the specific departure date, so seasonal clock changes are included.
Can TripCache keep track of this for me?
Yes. Add the flight to a trip in the free TripCache app and it keeps the local departure and arrival times in your itinerary. TripCache Pro can also import flights from forwarded booking confirmations and send live flight-status alerts where the data provider covers your flight. The airline remains the source of truth for the final schedule.
